Glaucoma: What it is -- and What Can be Done About It

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes serious damage to the optic nerve within the eye. The most common reason that glaucoma occurs is that fluid accumulates within the eye, which then puts excessive pressure on the optic nerve. Eventually, this extra pressure will cause the optic nerve damage.

glaucoma help from your optometrist in sammamish, WA

There are two types of glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma. By far, primary open angle glaucoma is the most common kind of the disease. This kind of glaucoma develops slowly over time. Many people who suffer from primary open-angle glaucoma don't even know they have it at first, as it rarely causes changes in the vision early on. Primary open angle glaucoma can be detected during routine eye examinations, so it's very important to keep up regular exams. Dr. Moscovitz at NewVision Eyecare can provide both diagnosis and early treatment that will prevent the disease from worsening.

In closed-angle glaucoma, the iris is out of position. This results in an increase in eye pressure, and it can result in blindness if not addressed quickly. Although closed-angle glaucoma isn't evident early on, the signs can be quite severe when they do occur. There are often clear indicators of advanced stage closed-angle glaucoma, including blurred vision, pain in the eyes, headache, and visual distortions like halos. If you have any or all of these symptoms, call us right away so we can arrange for you to see the eye doctor promptly for care.

Your Sammamish Optometrist Can Help With Glaucoma

Many patients who come to our Sammamish optometrist need help with glaucoma, and we're proud to provide service that's focused on compassionate care. The treatment prescribed will depend on your type of glaucoma, your symptoms, and other individual factors.

Treatment may begin with prescription eye drops and may include oral medication in some cases. If medication isn't successful in managing glaucoma, Dr. Moscovitz may recommend surgery. NewVision Eyecare has an established relationship with an eye surgery facility that provides surgical solutions for glaucoma when needed. Dr. Moscovitz will provide pre and post-operative care and will work closely with the surgeon to ensure that you get the best of care.
